Tommy was born in Australia in 1955. He received his first guitar in 1959 at the age of 4 - being taught by his mother to accompany her playing lap steel guitar. At the age of 7 he heard chet atkins on the radio. He vividly remembers this moment and says it greatly inspired him. By the age of 9, in 1964, he was a working professional musician. Recognizing the musical talents of Tommy and his brother Phil, their father created a family band, sold the family home and took his family on the road.
When six-year-old tommy played with his family in the family band, his mentors and inspirations were his mother and father. Tommy acquired his first guitar at age four and his mother taught him to play. He played by ear with no formal instruction and he still doesn’t read music. By the time Tommy turned six, he worked as a professional musician in the family band. Tommy on the rhythm guitar, his older brother Phil playing lead, his brother Chris on drums, and their sister Virginia on slide guitar earned the family’s entire income for several years.
Tommy developed his unique way of playing guitar when he was still a child. He plays with what he calls “finger style,” which is the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Instead of using a band for backup, melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy produces this on his guitar.
