NASCAR has been in existence for over 50 years, but when things first got started no one would have predicted that simple stock car racing would evolve into the technologically advanced sport it is today. Since its start in 1948, NASCAR fans have turned towards racing for relief from the stress associated with not only war, but everyday life. The original “stock” cars were developed because people struggling through wartime would have been upset about seeing “new” cars destroyed on racetracks while they were scraping together pennies to run their own rattletraps.

Only a year or two later, the president of the organization decided to explore racing the same types of vehicles driven by the public. Only minor modifications to the engines were allowed and drivers used ropes and aircraft harnesses in place of standard seatbelts. The original stock car didn’t even have a roll bar – those weren’t mandatory until 1952.
