Dallas (pronounced /ˈdæləs/) is the second largest city in the state of Texas after Houston and the eighth-largest in the United States.

As of July 1, 2009, CNN Money reported Dallas edged past San Diego (pop. 1,279,329) back into the 8th spot, with a population of 1,279,910.

With an estimated population nearing 1.3 million, the city is the main economic center of the 12-county Dallas–Fort worth–Arlington metropolitan area that according to the March 2009 U.S. Census Bureau release had a population of 6,300,066 as of July 2008, making it the number one metropolitan area in population growth in the nation last year.
It is also the center of the largest metro area in Texas.

Founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city in February, 1856, the city's economy is primarily based on banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, and transportation.

Located in North Texas and a major city in the American South & Southwest, Dallas is the core of the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States that lacks any navigable link to the sea.

The city's prominence despite this comes from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, its position along numerous railroad lines, a strong industrial and financial sector, and its status as a major inland port (due largely to the presence of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, one of the largest and busiest in the world).

They are also the second most valuable sports organization in the world. The Cowboys are only out-valued by Manchester United, a soccer club from England, who are valued at 1.8 billion dollars.
The Cowboys are relocating in to their new 80,000-seat stadium in suburban Arlington.


The most notable event held in Dallas is the State Fair of Texas, which has been held annually at Fair Park since 1886.
The fair is a massive event, bringing in an estimated $350 million to the city's economy annually.
The Red River Shootout, which pits the University of Texas at Austin against The University of Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl, also brings significant crowds to the city.

Other festivals in the area include several Cinco de Mayo celebrations hosted by the city's large Mexican population, and Saint Patrick's Day parade along Lower Greenville Avenue, Juneteenth festivities, the Greek Food Festival of Dallas, and an annual Halloween parade on Cedar Springs Road.
